newbie with newbie question

Okay so I have a G4. Love it. Need a webcam. The iSight seems like the obvious option. There are always some people selling them on Craigslist for about 100 bucks. Not a bad price, eh? Should I be wary? I have been thinking of buying an iSight for months now and all the people I have ever contacted on Cl said, "oh,I just used it once and don't want it anymore." Is there some problem I should know about?

I think my main concern is...can I use it with yahoo messenger? Or does it work with something else. I think I read somewhere it works with AOL and I hate AOL. And, who is on iChat? Anyone?

I am rambling a bit, sorry. Just want to make the correct purchase! Thank you!

need help PC to MAC A/V chat

hi everyone, i just got an iSight for my mac yesterday but the person im trying to A/V chat with has a PC and i cant find any messenger programs that will allow our wedcams to see eachother. does anybody have any suggestions??

iSight on a PC

. . . can be done, on AIM, Yahoo, or MSN, but the mic doesn't work, they'll have to have a separate standalone mic. They will also need a 6-port FireWire card, as the 4-port ones for PC laptops do not carry power, though maybe with an external power source for the card. But who wants to carry that around with their PC laptop?

The iSight on AIM (which is what you'll want to use if you want to iChat with them) is limited to 320x240, 15fps connection. It will do automatic focus, at least, and has great optics for a webcam.

The thing is, the first time they plug it in to a PC they will have a washed out image. They need to use Yahoo IM or MSN IM to correct this, THEN launch AIM to iChat with you.

So basically, the attractive feature for a PC user is the auto focus, which no other webcam I know of has. And it's a Trojan Horse for them to get a Mac Mini or an iBook when they see how good it is on YOUR mac. ;-)

CNN is using iChat/iSight on their Situation Room program, and this article (probably good for today only) kind of explains how you'll feel when you do your first iSight to iSight Mac-based conference:

drivers

really what I want is to be able to manualy ajust brightness on my isight
but for some reason on my mac there are no capasitys for making these changes, like when broadcasting via yahoo messenger, i don't use ichat cause all my friends use windows
and there drivers for there shittty usb cams all have these capabilities
any clues
on this or should i just live with it as it is

sound quality

I'm using my iSight for podcasting, and I'm endeavoring to get better sound quality out of it. I found this:

USB WebCam

Perhaps this is the wrong tribe to ask this, but I'm looking for a webcam. And I like all things Apple... but $140 for a webcam? Seriously! I can't seem to justify paying that much money.

Perhaps the owners of iSight could convence me otherwise or know something about the product I don't.

But has anyone found a decent priced, decent performing, USB webcam alternative?
